I was warned by an older colleague that homeownership is “finding where the previous owner cut corners”. I love the home we found a was hoping we’d just be lucky and nothing would go wrong. Not quite. We purposely bought lower in our price range, had the down payment in cash which felt great. The house is a 4 bedroom with an office, but functionally it’s 3 bedrooms with an office and a bonus room. The dishwasher was not mounted at all so it slammed forward when I opened it. Supposedly all brand new appliances. Had someone come by to mount the dishwasher an he informs me half my appliances are in fact items returned under warranty claim then sold for pennys on the dollar. No warranty for us - if it breaks we’re on our own. Ouch. Oh and there’s absolutely a squirrel in the wall. So I’ve just scheduled a pest control contractor. And - there’s a tree in bad shape with branches over the roof, originally thought it looked healthy but it definitely is rotting and needs to come down. On top of installing AC (which we planned for) - this all feels a bit disheartening. It’s a damn good thing we stuck within our budget or I would truly be out of money with the unexpected expenses encountered in the first week. Just… wondering if others have experienced something similar? So happy and thrilled to be a homeowner and I feel lucky and fortunate but also most of my money is gone all at once and running into more unexpected expenses is just incredibly stressful. I wouldn’t quite say I’m feeling regret - but maybe I’m feeling defeated. Am I overthinking? Did I totally mess up? Is it common to feel this unsure while settling in?
