Users want the ability to choose or switch between different therapeutic approaches (e.g., CBT, psychodynamic) within the app to better suit their needs.
Eight months ago, I published a post and asked whether I should change my therapist. At the time, I was seeing someone who used what I believe was a psychodynamic approach. It required weekly sessions, which I couldn’t consistently afford, so progress was limited. Eventually, based on some of your recommendations I switched back to a therapist who uses CBT. While CBT is structured and practical, I’ve realized something important about myself: I struggle with its symptom-focused approach. Most of the work revolves around identifying a problem, assigning a task (like working on automatic thoughts), and managing the symptoms. But here’s my frustration — I don’t actually know what I’m suffering from. I don’t know what my diagnosis is. I don’t know what framework explains my patterns. Yet I’m working on symptoms without understanding the bigger picture. Sometimes sessions feel more like: “What’s the issue? Here’s the tool. Apply it.” And that’s it. I also notice that CBT therapists tend to interrupt — not in a rude way, but because they’re trying to structure the session. Still, I often leave feeling like I wasn’t fully heard. What I truly want is deeper analysis. I want to understand the roots of my beliefs, fears, and recurring thoughts. I want a psychological formulation — something that explains why I am the way I am, not just how to manage it. Yes, I’ve done exercises like identifying automatic thoughts, which does touch on patterns. But I want to hear it from a professional perspective. I want someone to connect the dots for me. Has anyone else struggled with this difference between CBT and more insight-oriented therapies?
