The Great Clips app's system should allow users to easily update their preferred name linked to their phone number. This is crucial to prevent deadnaming and ensure the correct name is used during check-ins and appointments, improving the user experience for transgender and non-binary individuals, or anyone who has changed their name. Currently, the system may retain old names, requiring manual intervention by staff.
I had a very nice interaction at my barber shop a while back and wanted to share! I go to Great Clips for my haircuts. My hair grows in pretty thick and fast, and I have to get it trimmed and shaved pretty frequently. Great Clips is somewhat cheap, so I go there since it's hard to mess my hair up usually. It's a simple style. I did a "check in" on the app and walked there. I typed in my current name for the check in, but my phone number still pops up my dead name in their system. I'm only 6 months on T, my voice is still kinda in this middle ground and I'm misgendered by strangers frequently. It's kinda whatever, it's not like they know I'm transitioning, I just take it as it comes and shrug it off. Not like they mean anything by it. The woman at the front greeted me, checked me in so they knew I was there, and asked for my number. I gave them my phone number, she looked it up and replied "Oh! I see you have a different name here, do you want me to change it?" I... maybe didn't quite understand the question at first, I kinda looked dumbfounded because I was like... What different name? It should be (dead name?) At this point, no one has offered to change my dead name yet at the local Great Clips. She said "Yes it's (dead name.) Would you like me to update it with a new name?" It clicked for me and I was like OHHHH!! Yes that would be great!!! I may have felt just a little stupid but hey whatever we got there lol. Anyways it felt great to get my name updated! There's always good folks that will help you in the ways they can. It might have been a minor 5 second thing for her, but it was super nice and I appreciated it a lot!
