Requesting Slack to enhance features that support async communication for teams across multiple time zones. Suggestions include better message clarity tools and integrations with screen recording apps for easier communication.
"our team spans portland, new york, london, and singapore. there is literally no time when everyone is awake. we've been doing this since before the pandemic and have some norms that work. write for the reader with zero context. every slack message should make sense to someone who hasn't been following the thread. re-state the situation before your point. makes messages longer but kills the back-and-forth. loom for anything that would take more than 3 paragraphs to type. screen recording with narration is faster to make and easier to consume. for shorter messages i dictate my slack and email responses using Willow Voice, a voice dictation app. when i have a bunch of messages waiting from the london team i can clear all of them by talking instead of typing. the speed difference compounds when you're doing 20+ async messages a day. chatgpt for clarity checks. before sending a long async message i'll ask chatgpt to flag anything ambiguous. when the other person can't ask a follow-up for 8 hours, clarity matters more than it does in person. document decisions, not discussions. we have a decisions log in notion. date, participants, rationale, alternatives considered. eliminated half the ""didn't we already decide this"" conversations. what async norms has your team built? especially multi-timezone teams."
