heyyy fellow insomniacs! I recently saw a poo ost demonising Z drugs while praising benzos so I figured that I should post my own experience so that people get to see both sides of the coin. I've suffered from insomnia since I was 11 or so. it used to be and on and off thing at first but got worde with time. i sleep very little on not at all for days on end on my own these days. My previous docs were very reluctant on using Z drugs or benzos for sleep and pushed Olanzapine, Hydroxyzine, mirtazapine and seroquel onto me instead. Hydroxyzine didn't do anything at all, didn't even make me feel groggy. Mirtazapine would knock me me out but then would wake me in the middle of the night because of the insane restless legs that it would cause. Olanzapine and Seroquel worked to put me to sleep but I'd have a very hard time waking up the next day and I couldn't think and would have extremely slowed reaction times for nearly two days after taking them. They were absolutely horrible for me. I moved to Benzos next and while they do work, I found that they don't work that well for me tbh. Nitrazepam lasts waaayy too long and has massive next day residual effects, so does Bromazepam.... I feel tired, groggy and general weakness (from the muscle relaxation) in the morning which makes it hard to drive to work and function properly until about 11 in the morning. Alprazolam (Xanax) doesn't have any next day effects but only works for like 2-3 hours max. Also, all benzos suppress my REM sleep massively in a very similar fashion to alcohol. So I feel tired the next day no matter how much I've slept. It's 2 a.m where I live right now, I took Nitrazepam instead of my normal Zolpidem (Stillnox) or Zopiclone as a rotation earlier in the night and it pretty much wore off, I'm wide awake right now. However, the shitty muscle weakness is still here. I can hardly move around without risking falling lol. Z drugs on the other hand work great for me. I've been on Zopiclone (daily) for years and it still works great without any next day effects. I've recently started Zolpidem and this one works great too, despite it's short half life I don't really wake up at night. Maybe once every couple of days at 3 a.m but I usually fall back asleep within a few minutes afterwards. Even though I've been taking Zop daily for years, I have tried taking a couple days off them and honestly it went pretty well. I took magnesium maleate on these days, the only difference was that I fell asleep wayyyy later than usual and my sleep quality was shit for like 2-3 days (decreased deep sleep and REM boost). Overall, Z drugs have been a blessing for me and their relative short half lives (compared to most benzos) pretty much eliminated the risk of physical dependence for me. The one downside of Z drugs tho is how wild and dishnibited they make me right before knocking me out. Like for a solid 30-45 mins before falling asleep they turn me into this completely cold and dishnibited shell, kinda like binge drinking does to me. I've never experienced the same on any benzos, even high doses of Alprazolam didn't have this effect on me, it would just make me all wobbly and knock me out for a couple of hours. The one thing that I figured how to combat this is to lay in bed after taking them and keep my phone away, this way I fall asleep almost immediately when they kick in. Overall, Z drugs have been a life saver and work great for me, better than any Benzos. I'd love to hear your experience in the comments!
