Improve lighting and overall security measures at charging sites to make users feel safer and more comfortable, especially during night-time charging sessions or in isolated locations.
I've been engaging with EV drivers and charging operators across the US and certain amenity issues consistently arise. While charging networks are growing, the surrounding experience often falls short. Here are a few recurring patterns: • Safety - Many charging sites are isolated or poorly lit. Drivers frequently wait 20–40 minutes in locations that don’t feel welcoming or safe. • Retail hours don’t always align with charging habits - For those that need to charge at night or early morning, a charger next to a store that closes at 7 PM doesn't effectively address the amenity issue. • “Please don’t use our bathroom” - Even when retail options are nearby, staff often discourage or block EV drivers from using restrooms. While understandable from their perspective, it can be frustrating for drivers. • Distance and friction - An amenity that requires a 7–10 minute walk each way doesn't actually function as an amenity within the reality of a charging session, particularly when people are worried about their vehicle. EV charging has created dwell time in locations that were never designed for people, and we can't expect retail to adapt seamlessly. A purpose-built solution is needed. I'm interested to hear if other founders, operators or drivers are noticing similar patterns and what potential long-term solutions you want or envision.
