User is concerned that Orico X50 and Orico X40 external SSD enclosures, which rely on passive cooling, might lead to throttling and stuttering during long gaming sessions with demanding games like RDR2. They are looking for better thermal management solutions to ensure sustained performance for gaming.
Just joined the M4 Max 16” MBP club! I’m setting up a dedicated external drive for a Steam/Crossover library. I’ve narrowed it down to four very different price points, but I’m torn between "pretty" passive cooling and "ugly" fan cooling for long gaming sessions and or just general Stability/Thermals. I've picked out a few nvme drives that I think would be decent all of different varying speeds even though they are Gen 5 drives. My biggest concern is are the faster performing Gen 5 drives the ones that are shooting over 10,000 Mbps a second are they even worth it to begin with OR is the heat going to be more prevalent versus maybe perhaps the 990 Evo plus which is only 7,000 megabits per second but still a Gen 5 drive? The Contenders: The "Mac Style" TB5: Orico X50 Enclosure ($167) + Samsung 990 Evo Plus 2TB ($176). Total: $343. This matches the Mac’s styling finish. But it's passive cooling—will it throttle and stutter after several hours of RDR2 Or Any demanding games? The "Pure Power" Setup: Acasis TB501 Pro TB5 ($205) + Corsair MP700 Elite 2TB ($244). Total: $449. This is a Gen 5 drive in a fan-cooled TB5 enclosure. Most expensive option. but potentially the only one that won't potentially overheat thermally speaking. For the same price there are options like the Samsung 9100 which are 5000 Mbps even faster but which leads me to believe potential heat issues even in this particular enclosure? The "Value" All-in-One: Orico X40 2TB Pre-built ($279). A simpler TB4 solution. It looks great, but I'm worried about the cooling and or quality of the drive vs a Corsair, Samsung, WD etc... The "High Capacity" Tank: SanDisk Extreme PRO USB4 4TB ($489). 2TB model is $320. Most storage for the money. It's rugged, but does the silicon/rubber shell trap too much heat for sustained gaming? I feel this is more dedicated for just backing up photos or transferring files from drive to another drive versus a constant accessing files such as gaming. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with any of these particular enclosures and has any recommendations on what I should do for this dedicated purpose of simply gaming only. I already possess a crucial X10 Pro 4 TB model which is used for backing up photos. Ideally I'd like to keep the MacBook since it's only a 1 TB model with at least 200 to 300 gigs free.
