User is having issues with a surge protector indicating 'Not Grounded' even when plugged into a 3-pronged outlet. They need a reliable way to verify grounding.
So from what I understand 3 pronged outlets are supposed to be grounded, that’s what lets them protect your electronics from power surges. I moved into new apartment this new year and wanted to hook up my PC in a specific room and my surge strip says “Not Grounded”. There’s already a properly grounded outlet in the next room over but I already have TV and game console plugged into it. I informed my landlord and their maintenance team basically just installed a GFCI outlet to replace the already 3 pronged outlet. Surge strip STILL says “Not Grounded” and from what I understand, GFCI WILL NOT protect my appliances from a power surge, even with my surge strip plugged in. How do I go forward about this? I want to use my PC but I don’t want to risk my stuff getting toasted bc they’re too lazy to do the right thing and properly ground the other outlets. I imagine if one or two outlets in the same unit are grounded, surely the other outlets can be made to be grounded, right? Just wanna know if this is a “rent in escrow” kinda situation.
