I feel like the main issue is automatic detection is needed and users outside of cars need to be prioritized. No one walking or biking should be waiting 2 minutes to go through an intersection. Hitting the beg button isn't hard if it's sited properly (and frankly too many of them here aren't), but it's adds friction and encourages people to not use them if they feel they don't need to.
