User wants custom workout programs to automatically receive rep range and RIR (Reps in Reserve) periodization recommendations, similar to the app's generated programs, to avoid tedious manual setup.
I’ve been lifting for years and have used workout apps before, but this is my first experience with MacroFactor’s new workout app, so I wanted to share some early impressions. I started by logging about a week of past workouts to give the app a bit of a data head start. I also tried the program generator, and it honestly looks great. I can see why it works really well for most people. That said, I’m pretty set in my ways when it comes to exercise selection and overall structure, so I ended up going the custom program route. I’ve mentioned this in a few threads already, but my main disappointment was that custom programs don’t get the same rep range and RIR periodization recommendations that generated programs do. I haven’t really heard anything definitive from the devs on whether that’s something they plan to support or even want to support, so I’ve accepted that for now. Because of that, I had to manually set rep ranges and RIR targets for every set of every exercise across cycles. At first it felt tedious, but I’ve started to get used to it. I still hope that one day custom programs get more of that automation, but if they don’t, it’s not a dealbreaker for me. Despite that friction, I’m really enjoying the app. Smart progression has been genuinely fun to use, and I find myself excited for workouts and even individual sets just to see how it adapts. At times it’s been impressively accurate at predicting how close I am to failure for a given RIR. It’s not perfect, but I trust it’ll get better as it learns me over time. I’ve noticed a few small things that feel like minor bugs or quality-of-life opportunities, but I’m mostly holding off on posting those since I’m sure plenty of people are already reporting them. Overall, I’m having a good time with it and I’m excited to keep using it and see how it evolves. I keep wanting to lift more just to keep playing with the app, makes me want to workout 5 times a day.
