I'm an ML engineer in the self-driving car industry, with ~8 years of industry experience in ML, and a BS/MS in computer science with an AI focus. I have active experience with modern technologies: Transformers, RL systems, etc. This context is simply to highlight that I've been in and around the industry for a decade plus and have desirable skills. I'm also leaving my current company, and over the past few months I've largely spent time on X, reading up on research, and interviewing. As I wrap up my job interviews and prepare to start a new role, I want to share some thoughts I had on the state of the industry, and especially Twitter/X. X is a fantastic place to stay up to date on AI information. Many companies and industry leaders post product, company, and research updates directly on X, and in many ways it feels like the clear best place to keep a pulse on industry developments. There are also genuinely useful nuggets of information: vibe checks on new models, information on talent migrations between top companies, compelling AI workflows and new tools, and thoughtful responses and insights from industry leaders (looking at you @karpathy). That said, it is also clearly a place where hype, exaggeration, fear of missing out, and fear of falling behind thrive. I cannot tell you how many "it's so over", "this is the end", "there will be no more coding" posts I have seen in the past 3 months. Every new model release, product demo, and company announcement claims to radically alter or automate entire job sectors or functions. Many times these claims are made not by the authors or companies, but by the X hype sphere, but even companies/lab leaders themselves sometimes make radical claims. If you're not incorporating every new model, tool, or workflow into your day to day life, you're falling behind. If you're not vibe coding profitable SaaS businesses outside of your full time job, you're falling behind. If you're not living in SF directly above your office, you're not grinding hard enough. The AGI is here and you've already lost unless you work at a top lab. Actually even if you work at a top lab you've lost. No one will ever hire anyone ever again. I'll leave out any commentary about the political content, but if you consume that too, like most social platforms, the algorithm is also happy to provide emotionally charged content in both directions. After a while I felt the cons outweighed the pros, and although I was getting valuable information, I felt stressed. I found myself less excited about certain, objectively good job opportunities. The temptation to open my For You page is too much. It becomes habitual and hurts my ability to focus. I find myself reaching for my phone immediately when I am idle. This is certainly exacerbated by the fact that I do not have much work to do these days while I am going through this job transition. I justified to myself that I was benefitting from the AI content, and I was using it as a way to stay up to date on research, but there are other ways to get this content. I wish I could completely disable the For You page and only see post from those I follow. I would also love if you could consume the content in an RSS feed or some other client. There are some exceptional newsletters, my favorite of which is AINews. It is thorough and informative, and you can skim the results in a few minutes and go read specific announcements or posts if you want. If I could get posts from a few specific accounts on X and read this newsletter, I think I could get nearly all of the benefit of being on X chronically with much less downside. If anyone knows how to do this please let me know. I don't claim to provide advice about the AGI hype or what the future will hold, or how to manage your own X consumption. I simply wanted to share my experience, wish everyone well, and encourage people to stop and smell the roses sometimes.
