User needs surge protection for existing extension cords to comply with apartment inspection requirements, and wants a single-outlet surge protector to plug the extension cords into.
So long story short, my appartment had city inspectors come in and they said that all my extension cords got to go. I have maybe 5 of these braided extension cords (mostly because of the holidays I have quite a few lights that would not normally be hooked up) I don't really want to buy all new surge proctor extension cords and waste all of these ones I have currently. Is it possible to just buy a surge protector that has one plug that goes into the outlet. And then plug my current non-surge protector into those? That way I'm still protected and I'm not wasting any current power cords? I know typically you don't really want to take an extension cord and plug it into a power strip. But if it's a single outlet is it the same rule? Appreciate any and all suggestions / tips. Thanks! Edit: 12/24 Update, received this information on my door today, they're coming back. It apparently is a city "thing" not totally sure, been living here for over 5 years and this is the first time they have been here. "605.1.2 EXTENSION CORDS – EXTENSION CORDS AND FLEXIBLE CORDS SHALL NOT BE USED AS PERMANENT WIRING; SHALL NOT PASS THROUGH ANY DOOR, WALL, FLOOR, OR CEILING; AND SHALL NOT BE CONCEALED INSPECTOR COMMENTS: Remove unprotected devices from Left Bedroom- must be surge-protected." They're power strips which I guess means extension cords. And right here everyone talking about overloading and stuff. They specifically want surge-protection "605.1 ELECTRICAL – INSTALLATION “ALL ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT, WIRING, AND APPLIANCES SHALL BE PROPERLY INSTALLED AND MAINTAINED IN A SAFE, APPROPRIATE MATTER INSPECTOR COMMENTS: Breaker panel cannot be blocked in Kitchen of apartment." "[the city] will return to re-inspect the community, as well as your home. If the above item(s) are not corrected upon their re-inspection, you may receive fines from the City." The breaker panel had a single command hook mirror. which I've already taken down. He said "It must be easyily accessible in times of an emergency" Which it's a small mirror on a single hook. I guess that's too blocked?
