The user requests a column view similar to macOS Finder's column view, which allows seeing nested directories side-by-side for faster navigation in large directory trees and reduces cognitive load.
Hi KDE community! 👋 I really enjoy using Dolphin as my file manager in KDE Plasma — it’s powerful, customizable, and integrates nicely with the desktop. One thing I miss from macOS Finder is the column (Miller Columns) style view for browsing folder hierarchies. This view lets you see nested directories side-by-side and quickly navigate deep structures without switching between folders one by one. Right now Dolphin doesn’t have a true multi-column mode like this (the old column view was removed long ago, and it’s been requested again recently). Why this would improve UX: • It speeds up navigation in large directory trees. • It reduces cognitive load — you always see where you are in the folder hierarchy. • It’s especially helpful for users coming from macOS who rely on this visual structure. Is there any plan to add this kind of column view to Dolphin in a future KDE Gear / KDE Plasma release? Would the devs consider a plugin, optional view mode, or UX study around this idea? Thanks! 🙏
