Users in India, especially the middle class, associate yoga and meditation with religious practices. An app should combine religious practices (like chanting 'om namah shivay 108 times') with meditation to be culturally relevant.
If you were to name 3 meditation apps, which ones would you list? Most probably Headspace. Maybe Calm. Or Aura Health. Now, can you name three meditation apps that are built FOR India? I couldn't and thus this post. Read on... So, last week, while I was lurking around on Twitter, I spotted someone (I forgot to bookmark that tweet) talking about their parent wanting to use an "Indian" meditation app. And apparently, they couldn't find one! So I got digging. First, some numbers. Apparently, Headspace was valued at $3 BILLION in 2021. Calm at $2B. The ones focussed on India? Well, the names were hard to come by. Forget data and numbers. So I got thinking, what if I built an app that has... 1/ Authentic guidance from Indian practitioners 2/ Meditation techniques that align with your daily pooja or morning rituals (thanks to the likes of Astrotalk for showing that there's a market!) 3/ Content in your mother tongue. Not just Hindi but other widely spoken languages in India. After all, of the 600M+ smartphone users in India, about 85% prefer content in native language. Plus, some research said that global meditation apps see 68% drop-off rate among Indian users! 4/ Rooted in a deep understanding of practices based on actual Vedic principles, not watered-down interpretations. To be honest, this is still open - all meditation is not Vedic and how do I compete with the likes of Sri Sri, Jaggi, Ramdev etc? 5/ Pegged on digital health. After all, health is the next frontier in India. Plus there's growing digital wellness interest among middle-class (or India A and B, as classified by Blume Ventures). So here's a few questions... Would you subscribe to it? How much would you pay for it? What would be your thoughts? Would you gift it to your parents? You know, like Saregama India Ltd. made Caravan THE gift! And more questions... 1/ Would choose an Indian meditation app in the first place? Why? Why not? Is there even a use case? 2/ What's missing in your current meditation practice? Which Indian meditation practices would you like to see digitized? 3/ What other features do you think a meditation app could have? That's about it! Oh, there are indeed a few smart folks who have attempted to build an India-first meditation app. The two that I could spot the most are Neend (love their name) and Still (I couldn't find their LinkedIn page - they are at still DOT ag). Drop your thoughts in the comments or DM me. PS: No, I am not quitting C4E. Not yet :D. Now that Chandni has taken over day-to-day operations, I have a little more time to explore what can all of us at C4E do next. And we are keen on a product business. If you have ideas / thoughts, I'd love to talk :) PPS: This is one of the few ideas that am exploring. If you are passionate about meditation, wellness, health etc, let's connect. PPPS: Thanks to Dall-E for the image! Love how AI can make life simpler and better. Also, 1/100. CC Prakruti
