Add difficulty settings. You can let the people who want a challenge select Hard while beginners could choose Easy, and everyone else can go Normal. Instead, Silksong feels like it's locked into Hard more for every player, whether they want it or not.
let me give a quick history lesson to prove this; A lesson about the several of the mid to late stage boss fights in hollow knight. In the Queens Garden area, there is the >!Traitor Lord!<, one of only a few non->!pantheon!<and non->!dream!< bosses who originally did two masks of damage. This boss is encountered in the later half of the game, where the player already has most of their abilities and a healthy amount of health masks (and maybe some options mask charms). The thing is though, despite being one of the latter bosses that the player only needed to fight for several of the endings, Team Cherry decided to cut its damage output down because it was too difficult and unfair for players. Let me repeat that; *they condidered a mid-to-late game boss dealing two damage to a decently equipt player to be unfair.* Next; the >!Broken Vessel!<, a boss a player would typically encounter midway through the game; this boss spawns in Adds, but these enemies only deal one heart of damage and have no attacks and can only deal contact damage. And Thirdly; the >!Watcher Knights!<; a >!mid!<game boss fight where the player has to face off against multiple enemies simultaneously. While it did have a reputation for being difficult for the player at that stage of the game. Yet they only have 4 different attacks (not including contact damage) which a player can quickly learn and overcome. Better yet the player can make the fight easier by >!killing one of the knights before they step into the arena.!< Lets compare these to some of Silksong' bosses, shall we? Spoilers up ahead. >!Bell Beast: The literal second boss in the game; every single attack, including contact damage, does 2 damage at a point where that's more than 1/3 of the player' max health. This gives the player less time to learn their attack patterns every attempt, which mean the fight is a lot more tedius because a player has to throw themselves into a meat grinder until they have a breakthrought,!< >!Sister Splinter: the boss who is guarding the Cling Wall ability and is in the first half of the game; who does 2 damage for everything other than her vine walls, have about five "stages" (when she rages) and will spawn Adds that have multiple attack patterns that typically also deal 2 damage to a player that most likely doesn't even have 6 masks yet.!< While I could list more than two bosses, I don't think it would illistrate my point anymore, and that point being: Even without taking into consideration how weak fragle Hornet feels in Silksong due to how tanky the enemies are and how prevalent 2 danage enemies are thoughout the entirety of the game; the most of the bosses that the the player encounters in in Silksong after the "tutorial" boss fight are mostly harder that several bosses that show up in the latter half of Hollow Knight. Hell, as someone who has recently completely replaued and rebeaten Hollow Knight and is well into the >!second act!<of Silksong; I can safely say that >!Sister Splinter is a harder boss fight than Grimm; a DLC boss who was introduced to be a late game challange in Hollow Knight.!< Also a quick few rebuttles to several common arguments i've seen floating around "You just need to get use to Hornet's movement" - I have gotten use to it. I managed to beat >!Hunter's Marsh sans Chapel of the Beast!< before I beat >!Lace's first fight!<, and I only stopped there because I didn't have the upgrades to enter it yet, and after I got the upgrade challanged >!Savage Beastfly!< a few times before deciding to come back to it later. "Get Gud" or "Stop assuming your skills in Hollow Knight will transfer over to Silksong." - Let's put it into this perspective; I have completed Hollow Knight several times, and I'm saying that Silksong is a lot harder. How do you think a person who is new to the franchise is going to fare? How far do you think they're going to play a game that seems, to them, be the equivilant of thowing themselve into a brick wall until it breaks only to reveal more brick walls they have to break the same way? "The reviews are very positive" - Fun fact, most players don't review games; only a small fraction (between 5% to 25%) of people will review. Also, a lot of those positive reviews are just memes and Silksanity posts. "I didn't find the game difficult; I'm having fun with it as it is." - I'm glad you're having fun, I really do. But a lot of people aren't, and that is something we should at least look at. The worst part of this is that in the 7 years Team Cherry was developing this while keeping their presense and devlopment of the game almost a complete secret, there were several things in Hollow Knight that they didn't carry into Silksong; one of those features would have solved this entire problem: >!Difficulty Settings. You can let the people who want a challange select Hard while beginners could choose Easy, and everyone else can go Normal. Instead, Silksong feels like it's locked into Hard more for every player, whether they want it or not. Hopefully Team Cherry will update the game to add a Difficulty Setting, but who knows what they're thinking.!< Edit: When I say >!Grimm!<; I mean his base form, not >!Nightmare King Grimm!<. Though both of his fights get a lot easier once you figure out his combat rhythms/tempo. Edit 2: >!NORMAL GRIMM, NOT NIGHTMARE KING GRIMM!< Edit 3: I don't need tip on how to beat >!Sister Splinter!<; She's as dead as a talking vessel in the Plae King' presence. Edit 4: "But you can heal 3 hearts while in midair, so double damage hit aren't a problem." - I do not agree with this take becaue you can ONLY heal 3 hearts and you have to use an entire spool of silk to do so; there is no real player engangement as it's a hail mary healing move with can result in the player being a sitting duck for the countless flying enemies, enemies who have ranged attacks, or the enemies and bosses who jump high enough to smack you. Add to that being hit mid-heal cancels the heal, erases all the silk you were using to heal, and deal whatever damage the attack does if you're not wearing the right crest. To compare it to hollow knight's healing system, the player had to heal one heart at a time, but there were multiple facets to it that made it more engaging; only healing one heart meant you only used a third of your reserves and could use the rest to either continue healing or cast a spell, there were more healing related charms that mean you could tailor the healing system into something that worked the way you wanted it to work >!(Quick focus, deep focus, Hiveblood, Spore Shroom, Shape of Unn, and Joni's blessing directly affect how healing works, those there are also other charms that are a baseline increase in hearts in one form of another)!< Also to quickly mention, I think the movement and platforming sections are good; I didn't have any major issues with it once I got use to Hornet' diagonal dive (the only thing i'd mention here is that I think Hornet stops the dive a bit too quickly, but that's a nitpick more than an actual complaint.) Edit 5: "Silksong isn't Hollow Knigt, it's-" - I know silksong isn't Hollow Knight, it's Hollow Knight' sequal game, which is why I dislike how many facets of the systems in Hollow Knight have either been changed or alters into, what I personally consider to be, inferior mechanics. (a hot take, sure, but it's my personal opinion) Also, I've just looked over the steam acheivements, and it's funny how more than half the people playing the game haven't gotten the >!"Protected" achievement, which is the achievement for getting 4 mask shards!<, less than half the player base never reached the point of gaining any additional health.
